IRL streaming is a desk stream with the desk removed, and everything hard about it follows from that one change. A wired line is replaced by a cellular one that moves through buildings and crowds, so the parts list stops being about picture quality and starts being about what happens when the signal goes. Five jobs have to be covered, and they are worth naming in the order that decides whether the stream survives.

  • The connection. One or more data lines, ideally on different carriers, because this is the part that fails.
  • The encoder. A phone app or a dedicated box that turns the camera feed into a stream.
  • The relay. Where you send that stream instead of sending it to the platform, so a lost signal is a BRB screen rather than an ended broadcast.
  • The camera. Whatever the encoder can read, which on a phone build is the phone itself.
  • Power. Enough of it that the rig outlasts the stream, and legal enough to fly with.
The third one is the one beginners skip. The Relay Turns a Drop Into a BRB is a named rule here because platforms end a broadcast when ingest stops: streaming straight to Twitch from a phone means every tunnel is a restarted stream, a fresh went-live notification, and an audience that has to find you again.

Start on the phone, and not as a compromise

The phone rig is the easiest IRL setup there is and it is a legitimate one. A modern phone is camera, encoder and modem in a single object, the apps are free, and the app encoders speak SRTLA to a relay, so you get the one thing that actually matters. What you do not get is a second pipe: one phone is one connection, and The 70% Headroom Rule budgets it at about 3.5 Mbps of usable upload, which is a 1080p30 tier and nothing above it. Stream on that for a month before you spend anything, because it tells you whether you like doing this at all.

The two dedicated paths, and the $845 between them

A LiveU Solo at $995 tracked is the least setup you can buy: HDMI in, bonding built in, power it on. A DIY belaBOX is $150 in parts and does the same job with SRTLA, at the cost of assembling a board, flashing a microSD, and being your own support when something is wrong at 11pm in a car park. That gap is $845 and the honest way to read it is as an hourly rate on your own evenings. Neither is more reliable in a way a viewer can see; the LiveU has a phone number and the belaBOX has a Discord.
