You can spend thousands on an IRL rig, but you do not have to. This is the cheapest backpack that still holds a watchable, stable stream, built around a DIY encoder and secondhand parts.
- A used action cam or a gimbal cam with clean output
- An Orange Pi 5 running belaBOX (about $150 in parts)
- A secondhand modem with an ethernet port
- An unlimited data plan on a strong carrier
- A cheap relay so drops become BRB screens
- A power bank that can run the encoder
Do not cheap out on the connection. A $40 camera on a bonded, relayed uplink looks great. A $1,000 camera on a single weak hotspot will buffer and drop. The uplink is the stream.
The budget rig
Pros
- A fraction of a prebuilt or LiveU
- Holds a stable 1080p with bonding
- Upgrade one part at a time later
Cons
- You build and flash it yourself
- A 10k battery means shorter sessions
- Secondhand modems take some hunting
Orange Pi 5 + belaBOX
The cheapest real encoder path. HDMI in, bonding, open firmware.
$150
Find on Amazon Netgear Nighthawk M1
Often under $100 used, with the ethernet port you want.
$150
Find on Amazon When you outgrow it, the first upgrade is power and a second connection, not the camera. More battery and more bonded uplink buy more reliable airtime.
