The best gimbal for phone streaming, and when to skip one entirely

Three DJI gimbals separated by $57 and one extension rod, plus the tracked-price quirk that makes the newest one the cheapest.

A gimbal is the only part of a phone IRL rig that a viewer notices within five seconds. Handheld walking footage is the thing people click away from, and no bitrate fixes it, because a stabilised picture also compresses better: an encoder spends its budget on change, and a shaking frame is change in every pixel at once. That is the argument for one. The rest of this page is which, and whether.
| Gimbal | Tracked price | Extension rod | Tracking module | Axes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Osmo Mobile SE | $52 | 3 | ||
| Osmo Mobile 7P | $99 | 3 | ||
| Osmo Mobile 6 | $109 | 3 |
The newer one is the cheaper one right now
The Osmo Mobile 6 is the proven model everybody has heard of and it is tracked at $109, ten dollars above the newer 7P at $99, which also carries the tracking module the 6 does not. On today’s tracked prices there is no case for the 6 unless it is on sale below the 7P, which happens often enough to be worth checking. That is the sort of thing a price-tracking site can say and a review site cannot.

The pick at $99 tracked: an extension rod, a tracking module, and less money than the older model it replaced.

The value floor at $52 tracked, and the one in this build. Same three axes; you are giving up the rod, not the stabilisation.
What $47 of extension rod actually gets you
The rod exists to put the camera further from your face, which matters if you are the subject and the street is the background. If you are pointing the phone at what you are looking at, walking and narrating, you will never extend it, and the SE is the same stabiliser for half the money. Decide which of those two streams you are making before you spend the $47.
When not to buy a gimbal at all
If you are already buying a camera, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 at $512 tracked has the gimbal inside it, and a separate phone gimbal becomes a second stabiliser for a device that is now only your encoder and modem. The reverse is the case for buying one: on a phone build the handset is doing camera, encoding and uplink at once, which is what drains and heats it, and a gimbal is the cheapest way to make that overloaded device produce something watchable.
