How to stream on Instagram Live with OBS and a real camera
Instagram Live Producer gives professional accounts a real stream key. The vertical-only, 720p reality of using it, and the setup that fits it.
720p60 is your platform's practical ceiling. YouTube or Kick allow higher than Twitch standard.

Yes, you can go live on Instagram from a computer with OBS and a real camera. The door is called Live Producer, it is free, and most people have never heard of it. You just have to accept Instagram’s terms: vertical only, and the audience sees 720p no matter what you send.
The unlock: a professional account
- Switch your account to Creator or Business (free, in settings); personal accounts cannot use Live Producer
- Open instagram.com/live/producer on desktop and copy the RTMPS URL and stream key
- Paste both into OBS under Stream settings, custom service
- Set your canvas to 1080x1920 vertical, go live in OBS, then confirm on the Producer page
Build for vertical or look amateur
A landscape webcam feed pillarboxed into a phone screen reads as lazy. Rotate the framing instead: a 9:16 canvas, camera at eye level, light in front, and the composition holds up next to native phone streams. Instagram caps a live at 4 hours and delivers about 720p at up to 6,000 kbps, so a modest setup already maxes out what viewers can see: spend on light and audio, not resolution.

More camera than Instagram can display, which means a clean, noise-free 720p after Instagram compresses it.

Audio survives compression untouched. This is where an Instagram stream can actually be premium.
