The best streaming software for Mac in 2026

Apple Silicon changed the answer. Where OBS on Mac still lags, why Meld Studio is the new default recommendation, and what to skip.

Mac streaming used to mean running the Windows kids’ hand-me-downs. Apple Silicon flipped that: the M-series chips encode video brilliantly, and the software that targets them natively gets more out of a MacBook Air than OBS gets out of many gaming PCs. The catch is that most streaming software still treats the Mac as an afterthought.

Why Meld is the new Mac default

Meld Studio is built Metal-first for Apple Silicon rather than ported to it, and it shows: smooth previews, low fan noise, and battery life that survives a stream. It is free without a watermark, multistreams, and can output landscape and portrait at the same time, so one session feeds Twitch and TikTok properly. The paid tier is AI extras, not core features.

Meld Studio

The Mac pick: free, native, and built for simultaneous horizontal + vertical.

OBS on a Mac is fine, with caveats

OBS runs natively on Apple Silicon and remains the compatibility king: every tutorial, alert service, and capture card assumes it. But the plugin ecosystem is Windows-first, some popular plugins arrive late or never on macOS, and window capture of certain apps still needs permission gymnastics. If you already know OBS, it will do the job. If you are starting fresh on a Mac, try Meld first.

OBS Studio

Still the standard, and the safe choice if you follow tutorials.

A Mac quirk worth knowing: your iPhone is a stellar webcam via Continuity Camera, no capture card needed. Pair it with a key light and you may not need a dedicated camera at all.
