The best mic arm for streaming: low profile, out of the shot, and quiet when you move

By Elan Harpaz · Published 2026-09-15

A low-profile arm keeps a dynamic mic under your chin and out of the camera frame. Picks from a $17 desk stand to the Elgato Wave Arm Pro, with the weight limits that matter for an SM7B.

Best mic arm for streaming: the short answer
This PC / Desk build holds 1080p60 on Twitch (standard) and costs $468.98 in hardware. It needs roughly 8.6 Mbps of sustained upload to hold that comfortably, and what stops it going higher is its encoder. Your encoder tops out at 1080p60. A higher-end encoder would go further.

The best mic arm for streaming is a low-profile one, because it comes in under your chin from the side of the desk instead of hanging over the top of the frame. The Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP does that for about $70 and holds a Shure MV7 or SM7B without sagging. If your camera is above the monitor and the mic is allowed in shot, the RØDE PSA1 is the arm every podcast studio bought for fifteen years and still the smoothest to reposition mid-stream.

What actually goes wrong with mic arms

  • Sag. A cheap spring arm drifts down over an hour under a 1.5 kg SM7B. Check the rated load, and treat the rating as a ceiling not a target.
  • Squeak. Springs on exposed-spring arms sing when you swing the arm, and the mic hears it. Internal-spring and gas-strut arms are silent.
  • Desk clamp thickness. Standing desks with thick tops defeat small clamps. Measure before ordering.
  • The cable. Arms with a cable channel keep the XLR out of the shot; ones without look untidy on camera within a week.

Frequently asked

What mic arm holds a Shure SM7B?

One rated for at least 1.5 kg at full extension: the Elgato Wave Arm LP or Pro, the RØDE PSA1 or PSA1+, or a K&M 210/9 stand. Budget spring arms sag under it within an hour.

Low profile or over the top mic arm?

Low profile if the mic should stay out of the camera frame or if you use a dynamic mic that wants to be close to your mouth. Over the top if the mic is part of the look and your camera sits above the monitor.
